HDR is currently seeking applications from dynamic and eager-to-learn engineering students for a four-month placement at our Vancouver office. In this role, the successful candidate will work on a variety of projects related to building structural systems for different structures. The student will work on multiple projects at various stages of design and construction, providing excellent learning opportunities about the building engineering industry.
HDR will ensure the successful candidate is well supported and positioned for success. They will be an important member of our structural team, receiving mentorship to support their growth and development, and will have opportunities to learn from HDR’s subject matter experts.
Job Responsibilities
Responsibilities will vary depending on the project. As a Structural Engineering Co-op, you will:
- Gain practical experience on exciting projects
- Connect with recent graduates and company leaders through mentoring and young professionals programs
- Apply standard engineering techniques and procedures
- Perform assignments under supervision of a professional or Project Manager
- Conduct design calculations and element design, focusing on steel, concrete, mass timber, and masonry structures
- Create sketches and drawings to communicate design concepts
- Review and interpret documents to support construction activities
- Participate in field reviews or investigations
- Prepare field reports based on onsite observations
- Perform other duties as needed
Preferred Qualifications
- Two or more years completed toward a degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Knowledge of software related to the field of study/industry
- Ability to learn quickly and independently
- Teamwork skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Proficiency in CAD software such as Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam Revu
- Experience with structural analysis programs like SAP2000, ETABS, SAFE, RAM, etc.
- Knowledge of engineering principles for steel, concrete, and masonry structures
- Previous experience with an engineering firm is a plus
Required Qualifications
- Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate engineering program
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Basic Microsoft Office skills
