CONTRIBUTING TO THE CMPA

Actuarial Services supports the CMPA’s mission and goals through proper valuation of the Association’s liabilities and determination of CMPA’s member fees. This is accomplished through detailed actuarial work following the Standards of Practice set by the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. The team develops proprietary applications and data structures, builds actuarial models and processes, supports financial auditing, and provides insight for the Association’s funds and liability management.

POSITION OVERVIEW

We are looking for a dedicated individual who is eager to apply their actuarial or statistical knowledge and skills in a practical setting, tackling real-world problems, and contributing to informed decision-making within the CMPA. You’ll be part of a team committed to handling challenging actuarial tasks in the area of medical professional liability, including but not limited to loss reserving, fee setting, financial projections, scenario and stress testing, and insurance program assessment.

This position provides the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a supportive and challenging environment, while providing a platform to significantly contribute to complex actuarial projects.

POSITION ACTIVITIES

  1. Support the refinement of year-end valuation documentation, including quality assurance of automation processes using Python.
  2. Contribute to the Actuarial System Review project.
  3. Assist in streamlining and automating Excel-based files that support PowerPoint presentations for year-end and mid-year actuarial valuation.
  4. Research, gather, and compile information on the application of advanced techniques such as machine learning and AI.
  5. Engage in the extraction, verification, and analysis of data.
  6. Assist in preparing and technically reviewing materials in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Data Science, or an equivalent field of study, having completed at least the second year.
  • Demonstrated experience and advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Successful completion of one or more actuarial exams is preferred.
  • Previous co-op or relevant work experience is preferred.
  • Experience with Python is an asset.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team with both technical and non-technical people.
  • Attention to detail and strong analytical thinking skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly on the job and achieve objectives while still learning.
  • Sound judgment and the ability to prioritize work.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to communicate in French is an asset.

POSTING DETAILS

  • Job type: Temporary, full-time position from September to December 2025.
  • Salary range: $23-$33 per hour, based on education and relevant experience.
  • Skills assessment: Selected candidates may be required to complete a skills assessment.
  • Location: Fully remote, working from a home-based office anywhere in Ontario and Québec. Alternatively, you may choose to work at CMPA’s office in Ottawa, ON, near Dow’s Lake.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in a full-time academic program with a co-op term during September to December 2025.
